Odoo Implementation Timeline: How Long Does It Really Take? (Indianapolis Guide)

The honest, phase by phase answer to how long an Odoo implementation actually takes, based on what we've seen across real Indianapolis projects.

"How long will this take?" is usually the second question we get, right after "how much will this cost?" And the honest answer is: it depends, but not in a vague, dodge-the-question way. It depends on specific, identifiable factors, and once we know a few things about your business, we can give you a real number instead of a shrug.

Here's the breakdown.

The Short Answer

Most small to mid-sized Indianapolis businesses complete an Odoo implementation in 6 to 16 weeks. Simple, single-module setups can be faster. Multi-location businesses, manufacturing operations with complex bills of materials, or companies migrating large amounts of legacy data typically land on the longer end, and sometimes beyond it.

The rest of this guide breaks down where that time actually goes.

Implementation Phases and Typical Timeframes

PhaseWhat HappensTypical Duration
Discovery and mappingReviewing current tools, workflows, and pain points1 to 2 weeks
Module selection and scopingChoosing which Odoo apps you need and defining project scope1 week
ConfigurationSetting up modules, business rules, and workflows2 to 6 weeks
Data migrationMoving customer, inventory, and financial records into Odoo1 to 4 weeks
IntegrationConnecting payment processors, e-commerce platforms, or other tools1 to 3 weeks
TestingVerifying workflows function correctly before go-live1 to 2 weeks
Training and go-liveGetting your team comfortable and switching over1 to 2 weeks

Some of these phases run in parallel rather than one after another, which is part of why total timelines vary more than simply adding up the rows above would suggest.

What Actually Makes a Project Take Longer

  • Number of modules. A business implementing just Sales and Inventory moves faster than one implementing Sales, Inventory, Manufacturing, Accounting, HR, and CRM together. More modules means more configuration decisions and more testing.
  • Data quality going in. Clean, well-organized data migrates quickly. Data spread across multiple spreadsheets, outdated systems, or inconsistent formats takes longer to clean up before it can move into Odoo.
  • Number of locations. Multi-location businesses need configuration that accounts for separate inventories, staff, and sometimes separate reporting, which adds real time to the configuration phase.
  • Custom development needs. Standard Odoo modules configured to fit your business move faster than projects requiring custom-built features or workflows that don't exist out of the box.
  • How available your team is. Implementation isn't something we do entirely on our own. It requires input from your team on workflows, decisions on configuration, and time for training. Projects slow down when that availability isn't there.
  • Industry complexity. Manufacturing implementations with detailed bills of materials and routings, or healthcare and wellness businesses with compliance considerations, generally take longer than a straightforward retail or service business setup.

Questions We Get as an Odoo Partner in Indianapolis

  • Can we speed up the timeline? Sometimes. Starting with a smaller set of modules and adding more later is one option. Having clean data ready before the project starts is another. But rushing configuration or testing to hit an arbitrary deadline usually costs more time later in the form of fixes after go-live.
  • Does a longer timeline mean a better outcome? Not necessarily. The goal is matching the timeline to the actual complexity of your business, not padding it out. A straightforward business shouldn't take 16 weeks just because that number sounds thorough.
  • What happens if we need more time mid-project? It happens, usually because a data migration turns out messier than expected, or a workflow decision takes longer to land on than planned. A good implementation partner flags this early rather than letting a delay show up as a surprise at the end.
  • Should we go live all at once or roll out in phases? Both approaches work, and which one fits depends on your business. A phased rollout (starting with one or two modules, then adding more) reduces risk and gives your team time to adjust. An all-at-once go-live can work well for simpler setups where the modules are tightly connected anyway.
